How you feel about life has nothing to do with your experiences

Transforming Your Life: How Changing Your Thoughts Can Change Your Experience

How does your life feel right now? Is it good? Bad? Overwhelming? Or maybe it’s a mixture of all those things, like a roller coaster ride. What’s fascinating is that the way your life feels isn’t determined by what’s happening around you but by what’s happening inside you.

The experiences we go through, the daily events that unfold, are merely external occurrences. They happen one after another, constantly evolving in the present moment. While we may have plans for our day, much of what we experience—conversations, places we visit, unexpected events—is unplanned and unanticipated. These experiences are like waves, constantly rolling in, without inherent meaning or intent.

The meaning we assign to these experiences is largely learned. We are taught to see rain as bad and sunshine as good. We form opinions based on what we’ve been taught by our parents, schools, and society at large. Over time, we build a complex set of ideas about everything, labeling experiences as good or bad, exciting or boring, right or wrong. But here’s the catch: the person next to you might interpret the same experiences completely differently. Our perceptions are highly subjective, shaped by our unique collection of ideas and beliefs.

So, how does this affect the way you feel about life? Our feelings are deeply intertwined with our thoughts. In any situation, your thoughts dictate whether you perceive it as fun, scary, exciting, or dull. These thoughts, which stem from the ideas we’ve stored over time, give context to our experiences and, ultimately, shape our entire perception of life.

But what is a thought? It’s simply your ideas speaking. As we accumulate ideas about various experiences, we build an internal narrative—a constant commentary on life. This narrative is filled with judgments and polarities, deciding what’s good or bad, desirable or undesirable. As a result, our feelings about life are directly influenced by this internal dialogue.

If your thoughts are predominantly negative, your experience of life will likely feel negative. Conversely, if your thoughts are positive, you may feel better about life—but with a caveat. Positive thoughts can also bring the fear of losing that positivity, leading to anxiety about maintaining it.

What’s crucial to understand is that our thoughts and the resulting feelings are not necessarily reflections of reality—they’re based on the ideas we’ve stored. These ideas, in turn, are not absolute truths; they’re simply information we’ve accumulated. And here’s where the magic happens: by changing the information—the ideas you hold—you can change your thoughts, and in doing so, change the way you feel about life.

Imagine this: if you had no thoughts at all about an experience, the underlying sensation is pure, unfiltered enjoyment. In the absence of thoughts labeling an experience as scary, bad, or boring, what remains is a peaceful, thoughtless enjoyment of life as it is.

This realization is transformative. It shows us that we have the power to change how we feel about life not by altering the external world but by shifting our internal world. By dissolving the ideas that generate our thoughts, we can dramatically change our experience of life.

The truth is, you are in charge. You have the ability to reshape your thoughts, and in doing so, reshape your life. This isn’t just about feeling better; it’s about gaining a superpower—the ability to experience life in a completely new and empowering way.

So the next time you find yourself overwhelmed or dissatisfied, remember: the key to change lies within. You are in control, and you have the power to change.
